NOTES

  • Approval of color PSS 58 Jahn Stone Restorer is 75 -80% of color. An additional gray color will be needed for foundation basic color.
  • North portico will need 2 1/2 to 3 weeks for cutting, pointing and cleaning. 2 to 3 weeks additional is needed for patching. A total of 5 to 6 weeks is required prior to the plaster people repairing the north portico ceiling.
  • Sealer must be applied as soon as possible after cleaning to reduce iron oxide from bleeding through again.
  • West portico stone is in extremely bad shape due to prior sandblasting. It's creating a difficulty to try to clean and patch stone.
  • Deck repair with waterproofing membrane will be done prior to cleaning and patching foundation base stones. This is due to moisture penetration through the deck.

ITEMS TO VERIFY

  • Gray color of Jahn Stone Restorer

PROJECT:     North & West Portico Restoration                               REPORT NO.   7

DATE   July 8, 1999   TIME   10:45 a.m.

PRESENT AT MEETING    Kevin Klosky - Keystone Waterproofing

Lou DeJulia - Mercer County Maintenance
                                                 Bob Mastriana - 4M Company

 NOTES

  • The West portico stonework is extremely deteriorated.
  • The amount of repair needed is beyond what was anticipated and the spottiness of the stone cleaning is complicating the coloration of the stone patching material. This is due to the sandblasting of the stone veneer finish that was done in the early '70s.
  • A needle hammer is being used to lightly remove dark stain areas of the stone columns that did not come clean with the cleaning solution. This allows for the weathered exterior shell to be opened up for the iron oxide remover to penetrate and clean.
  • Keystone is starting Monday to begin the stone patch with the dominant color PSS 58 that was previously approved.

ITEMS TO VERIFY

  • The remaining color choice of the other patches to be done where the stone is a different color.
  • What stone cleaning technique should be used on the extreme iron oxide spots that aren't coming clean?

NOTES

  • Keystone is still having difficulty cleaning the extremely deteriorated areas of the West portico columns.
  • Keystone still wants to try various other chemical stone cleaning processes and combinations prior to any abrasive cleaning techniques.   John mentioned that the cost of the John material for the stone repair for 1/2" thick (12 s.f.) or 3/4" thick (8 s.f.) is approximately $200.00 per bucket of which 30 buckets were figured.
  • Additional cleaning samples were looked at after an extended dwell time but unfortunately the columns still show spotty staining.
  • A roof inspection was made with John, Lou, Doug and Bob on roof gutters to determine if any leaks occurred in the built-in aluminum gutter and coping at the North East portico. The stone cornice underneath the gutter shows excessive deterioration and staining. Lou will have a roofer seal joints. Scuppers need to be kept clean. The built-in gutter coping needs a drip edge to throw water off from the face of the stone. Lou will look into this possibility with the roofer.
  • It was decided to try to do a test Wednesday to pressure clean the columns with glass bead granules the size between flour and salt granules.
  • With the scaffolding erected we were able to determine additional pigeon roosting areas that need to be addressed. Wallace was requested to get Easily and Rivers to price out the sloped plaster cap at the inside of the North portico beams for additional pigeon control and also the decorative molds at the center of the capitals.
  • Wallace to also price out the white aluminum sloped window sill caps and the door head caps at the interior of the North portico to eliminate additional pigeon roosting areas.
  • Victorian Week is Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 23rd -July 25th. the construction fence needs to be relocated temporarily behind the sidewalks to allow for more booth spaces.  Jerry will coordinate this with Lou and Doug.

ITEMS TO VERIFY

  • Dave Sebek from Keystone Waterproofing called to reschedule the meeting from Thursday, July 15th at 9:00 a.m. to Tuesday, July 20th at 11:00 a.m. This will give them more time to try other techniques and approaches.
